Magnet Feeding -A Conservative Treatment for Management of Non-penetrating Foreign Body Syndrome in Bovines

2014
Bovines suspected for foreign body syndrome were screened on basis of history of pica and metal detector examination. Twenty animals confirmed with non-penetraing metallic foreign bodies were evaluated on basis of symptomatology viz appetite, tympany, rumination status, evidence of pain, jugular pulsation, brisket oedema, milk yield, consistency, content and volume of faeces, haemato-biochemical parameters and radiological examination before and after magnet feeding. No untoward change was recorded in physiological, haematological and biochemical parameters. On radiological examination, foreign bodies were found attached with magnet in reticulum indicating prevention of foreign body penetration by magnet feeding. Cow magnet was found to be an efficient and easy method for preventing penetration of metallic foreign bodies in bovine reticulum.
