Chemical constituents of Triptergium wilfordii Hook.f and its toxicity

The therapeutic effect of Triptergium wilfordii Hook.f(TWHF) is significant in clinical,but the toxicity limits its applications in many fields.As a toxic traditional Chinese medicine,TWHF contains quite a lot of chemical constituents which are complicated.However,some components are synonym,which has become a big barrier in drug efficacy and toxicity research.This article classifies and combs the components in Triptergium wilfordii Hook.f,and reviews recent research on its toxicity,summarizes that the toxic effect mechanism may be attributed to its ability to induce apoptosis and oxidative stress,as well as multi-way combined action.We propose to make a thorough study on toxic monomers,meanwhile to elucidate the toxic material base of TWHF and its toxicology mechanism research from monomer,component and extraction three levels.
