Migration of the Liquid-Filled Balloon: Intestinal Sub-occlusion

2020
Intragastric balloons are usually safe and free of complications. However, in some cases, spontaneous deflation and intestinal migration may occur, mainly when proposed treatment period of 6 months is extended. This may be a serious complication, leading to intestinal obstruction and need for surgical management. The first sign of spontaneous deflation is methylene blue leak, which will make urine turn green. When this happens, prompt patient evaluation should be carried out. In this chapter, we present a case of intestinal obstruction due to liquid balloon spontaneous deflation.
