“Giving to working class neighborhoods’ residents, the will to stay put”

2018
France tomorrow is also at stake in its “popular neighborhoods” (working-class areas). The concentration of poverty in some territories suffering from a very negative image and a degraded urbanism threatens both the economic performance of the country and its cohesion. Olivier Klein, mayor of Clichy-sous-Bois and president of the ANRU exposes to Herodote his vision of the main issues for these neighborhoods and their inhabitants. The main point is to make people want to stay when their social situation improves, and the main lever for that is school. But the 20 measures that could solve “the problem of the banlieues” do not exist. It’s necessary to act on all fronts to achieve a certain “normal” life in these territories, to which the inhabitants aspire, and fight against the idea of helplessness of public authorities. This goes for the ANRU, whose action must go faster, for the police, who must be able to take care of the worries of everyday life, or for the mayor. Olivier Klein finally proposes a more peaceful management of the religious fact in these territories.
