[Raw data: population structures]
1980
Population structures are presented for countries in Africa the Near East Central America South America the Caribbean and Asia and for some subpopulations (e.g. rural or urban). Unadjusted raw data are presented by single year of age broken down by sex. Other structures (e.g. 5-year and 10-year) are presented for countries where single year breakdowns are unavailable or as a supplement for example containing data from other time periods. All populations are also described by age pyramids plotted from these data. Data used for the population structures are from nationally conducted censuses and surveys. Data that were collected at different points in time for the same populations for example several censuses are presented where available. The research was undertaken with the recognition that existing model life tables did not conform to the realities of the situations in developing countries. In addition indices of mortality were lacking. There is sufficient detail to enable researchers to complete interregional as well as intraregional comparisons and to use the data for calculation of other rates and indices. Subsequent volumes contain raw data on deaths mortality rates and life tables evaluation of the indices and adjusted indices.
