STUDY ON THE COMPOSITE WINDING MECHANICAL PROPERTIES BY EXPERIMENT AND NUMERICAL SIMULATION
2003
To reduce the amount of training quenches experienced in superconducting magnet impregnated with epoxy resin, new design limits with the coil under magnetic and thermal contraction loading are studied on the basis of experiment and numerical simulation. The fundamental to this aim is the collection of mechanical properties of the coil copmosites. Young′s Modulus and thermal contraction are primary unknown properties. Finite element analysis (FEA) of the coils using these properties would then be more accurate. Analysis of known good and bad magnet designs will help to establish new magnet design limits. This will form an important part in design of future magnets and also save a considerable amount of helium by review of the more standard magnet designs. Reported here are the results of the mechanical property tests and derivation of coil properties for using the FEA. The results of the magnet analysis using these properties will result in the suitable design for the engineering magnet.
