Abstract Cu-Si, Al-Si and Ni-Si alloys with a high content of silicon were prepared by the electrolysis of cryolite-silica melts using Cu, Al or Ni as cathode. Cu-Al alloys were prepared by electrolysis of cryolite-alumina mixtures, using a copper cathode.An attempt was made to prepare pure Si or an Si alloy by the anodic dissolution of Cu-Si, Cu-Si-Fe and Al-Si-Fe alloys using graphite, Ni and Cu cathodes. Pure Si could be deposited when graphite anodes were used. In other cases, Si and Al were deposited simultaneously.
