This volume reviews recent findings about nutrient utilization in low birthweight infants and offers up-to-date nutritional guidelines for these infants. Noted experts examine the influence of energy and protein intakes on body compsotion; offer specific recommendations on energy and protein intake; explain the impact of environmental temperature on the infant's utilization of energy; suggest ways of improving fat digestion and absorption; establish requirements for long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids; and discuss the protein requirements of neonates with infections. Full consideration is given to calcium, phosphorus, and magensium requirements and to vitamin A,D, E, and K supplementation. The book also describes a new approach to partial parenteral nutrition for extremely low birthweight infants.
