Effects of Sedum alfredii with red mud on the growth of Lactuca sativa in Cd contaminated soil

2011
In a pot experiment with cadmium contaminated soil, effects of Sedum alfredii,a Cd and Zn hyperaccumulator, with the application of red mud on the growth of Lactuca sativa were studied. Results showed that both Sedum alfredii or red mud could significantly decrease the total cadmium content in soil and promote the growth of Lactuca sativa. The plant grown in the treated soil shared higher height and biomass when compared with the control. The amount of absorbed Cd in the upper part and root of Lactuca sativa decreased significantly in the treatments. It was mainly due to that red mud could significantly decrease the exchangeable Cd in soil which is available for Lactuca sativa, and sedum alfredii would absord soil cadmium in large amount.
