Quality of life in teenagers coeliac patients and young adults in relation to diet

2006
Controversy exists regarding the association between coeliac disease CD) and adverse fatal outcome. Aim. The present study was designed to investigate the prevalence of D in the parents of preterm or small for date newborns or abortions and to ompared with prevalence in the parents of normal babies. Methods. From June 2004 to December 2005 we consecutively enrolled 70 parents (110 mother and 60 father) of preterm (<37◦ week) or small or date babies (weight<10◦) or abortions and 150 parents (75 mother, 75 ather) of normal babies (birth weight = 3000 g or more and gestational age 37◦ week) all born at Obstetrics-gynaecology department of our hospital. uman transglutaminase antibodies (Eu-tTG IgA Eurospital, Trieste) were easured. In the subjects with positive tTG, intestinal biopsy was performed. Results. In 3 parents, with pathological pregnancy (2 mother and 1 ather), was confirmed the diagnosis of CD. One father has CD trated with luten free diet 7 years before infant’s birth. The prevalence CD in this group as 2.4%. In the group of normal babies 2 parents (1 mother and 1 father) had athological tTG and histological features of CD therefore the prevalence as 1.35% OR 1.7831 (95% CI 0.25-19.9427) Fisher’s exact test, P= 0.68. he overall female/male ratio was 1:1. The clinical picture was silent in ne but non classic in the other (irritable bowel syndrome IBS, anaemia, soriasis, chronic fatigue). Conclusion. Our preliminary data show that CD is obviously more comon in the cases than in the control but the difference is not significant erhaps non associated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy-related vents. There is not any difference of the prevalence intersex. Physician’s wareness could improve for the diagnosis of non classic CD.
