Spinifex people, spinifex art

2012
In July 1998, Richard Court, then Premier of Western Australia, crossed the vast state to one of the most remote spots in Western Australia, the sand dunes of Mirramirratjara. He was only the third non- Spinifex person to visit this powerful place. The purpose of his trip was the result of years of negotiation, which culminated with the signing of a framework agreement to acknowledge native title of Spinifex lands. Two years later in November 2000, the High Court of Australia made its consent determination of native title at a special sitting on Spinifex lands. This determination recognised the ties of the Spinifex people to a landmass of over 50,000 square kilometres that stretched from the South Australian border on the east, the Nullarbor Plain on the south, and the Warburton Ranges to the north.
