Study for the implementation of an electric bus route for Mexico City

ABSTRACT Aprospectus to establish an electric bus route in Mexico City as a joffort between the National University of Mexico, the Mexico City government, and a local manufacturer is presented. The general design characteristics of the vehicles which are to be manufactured locally are presented. A financial analysis to estimate the economic feasibility of the proposal has been carried out. The efficiency and emissions to the atmosphere attributable to the electric buses are compared with petrol powered buses of the same capacity which are used extensively at present. The results show that from the technical, economic, and environmental points of view, the project is feasible and appears profitable. A prototype bus ready for evaluation will start operation in July of 1999.
