Preparation of AlâMo Intermetallic Powders by SolidâLiquid Reaction Ball Milling.

2010
Abstract A series of Al–Mo intermetallic compound powders like Al 12 Mo, Al 5 Mo, Al 22 Mo 5 and Al 17 Mo 4 were been synthesized respectively at different temperatures by solid–liquid reaction ball milling, a novel mechanochemical approach. The as-milled products are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results show that single phase Al 5 Mo and Al 17 Mo 4 intermetallic compound powders with an average diameter less than 100 nm may be obtained at 953 K after milling for 6 and 24 h, respectively. Finally, this paper discusses solid–liquid reaction mechanism and phase formation regularity in the milling process.
