Super-elastic Scattering from Ca and Rb in a Magnetic Angle Changing Spectrometer

2006
Super‐elastic scattering measurements at 20eV incident energy are presented for calcium and rubidium, contrasting differences between alkali and alkali‐earth targets. The laser excitation of calcium at 423nm is detailed, indicating the effects of optical pumping on the super‐elastic scattering process. A new type of spectrometer is described which exploits a controlled magnetic field in the interaction region, allowing super‐elastically scattered electrons to be detected over all geometries. The effects of the magnetic field on the laser‐atom interaction are considered for calcium.
