Polymer nanocomposites materials for aerospace applications

2019
The interest for polymer based nanocomposite materials has increased exponentially in the recent years, the success being ensured by the special properties and the wide range of applications across multiple high-end industrial areas. This paper presents the main components needed for the synthesis of nanocomposite materials with particular characteristics and analyzes the development perspectives in order to extend the applications in the aerospace sector.Research has shown that there are great challenges and opportunities in the development of nanocomposites, with special efforts to improve their multifunctional features by identifying and selecting the main components. To select the constituent phases, the properties (chemical, mechanical, thermal, electrical, etc.), the accessibility of the polymer matrices and the particle characteristics (shape, agglomeration tendency, size distribution, specific surface, etc.), compatibility / synergy between components are key factors for nanocomposite materials structure and properties. For the formation of composites with applicability in the aerospace domain a nanoparticle type system (minor component of type M2Oxundoped / doped, SiC, graphene oxide etc.) and an organic one (major component - PMMA, PVA, PS, PI, epoxy resins, phenolic resins etc.) are currently used and with various types of additions, ensure synergy and compatibility between components. Current technological requirements have stimulated the development of nanocomposites with optimal properties for targeted applications. The interest for polymer based nanocomposite materials has increased exponentially in the recent years, the success being ensured by the special properties and the wide range of applications across multiple high-end industrial areas.
