Characterized by a pattern of extreme pervasive, persistent, and debilitating inattention, overactivity, and impulsivity (American Psychiatric Association, Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition [DSM-IV]),1 ADHD is described as having a substantial lifelong impact on social, emotional, vocational, and academic performance as well as the health system in general.2 This disorder represents a growing public health concern because of its long-term adverse effects, long-term treatment with behavior-modifying drugs, and the significant financial impact on family schools and community.
