Molecular Cytogenetics of the Equidae: III. Cytological Localization of Heterochromatin and Satellite DNA in Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Equus zebra hartmannae (Matschie, 1898)

1984
Zebras have long fascinated zoologists because of their elegant form and striking coloration. Considerable effort has been devoted to analyses of their evolution and systematics. In spite of these efforts, widely divergent opinions are held concerning the origins and evolution of zebras. Zebras have been a further source of interest because of their ability to hybridize with other members of the family Equidae. Such interspecific hybrids may be produced despite considerable chromosomal differences between the parents [1, 2, 12, 18].
