Ruthenium containment during fluid-bed calcination of high-level waste from commercial nuclear fuel reprocessing plants

1977
During fluid-bed calcination of 1-year cooled high-level radioactive liquid waste from a 7.5 MTU/day commercial fuel reprocessing plant, approximately 1.9 x 10/sup 6/ Ci of /sup 106/Ru will be calcined daily. Based on laboratory data, the expected volatility of ruthenium in the fluid-bed process is 2 x 10/sup -3/% using inbed combustion heating; an off-gas cleanup system is proposed for removing the volatile and particulate ruthenium from the off-gas stream to a level which will result in release of less than 4 mCi daily to the atmosphere. 4 figures, 4 tables.
