Dispersion, mixing, and chemical reaction in a heterogeneous urban-industrial plume

1983
The present paper integrates the concentration and wind measurements of MISTT with the detailed emissions inventory of RAPS. The novel feature of this work is a direct comparison between observed crosswind profiles of pollutant concentration and simulated profiles derived from wind and emissions data. Good agreement is obtained between simulated and observed profiles for sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, testifying strongly to the consistency of three independent data sets. Corroborating measurements are unavailable for the simulated hydrocarbon profiles, which differ substantially from those for nitrogen oxides. On the days selected for study, the observed downwind profiles of ozone are most similar to the profiles of nitrogen oxides, not those of hydrocarbons.
