The Archives of Dermatology: The First Hundred Years

One hundred years ago this month, the first issue of theArchiveswas published under the title Journal of Cutaneous and Venereal Diseases (Fig 1). Selected articles from the past 100 years, accompanied by commentaries updating the findings of those reports, are reprinted in this issue of theArchives. Some additional landmark articles will be published in other issues during the centennial year. A brief historical review of theArchives, especially its earlier years with which most of us are least familiar, may serve as an appropriate introduction to this special issue. The Journal of Cutaneous and Venereal Diseases , which eventually became theArchives, was not the first dermatology journal on the American scene, but it was the first to be published monthly. Its chief predecessors were two quarterly journals, the American Journal of Syphilography and Dermatology and the Archives of Dermatology . The American Journal of Syphilography and Dermatology was
