Paintings on copper supports: Techniques, deterioration and conservation

1986
The method of production of copper plates, rolling and beating, is described as are the methods of preparing the plates to increase adhesion between the paint and the support. The problems faced by conservators have been caused by the paintings being stored or displayed in unsuitable conditions of high humidity or thermal fluctuation. The resultant damage can involve corrosion of the support as well as disruption of the paint layer. These effects are described in detail. Suitable methods of conservation are given. These involve mechanical removal of corrosion and the use of a number of common consolidants.
