Detection of a Grounding Threat to Shipping Using Shore-Based Radar--A Simulation Study
1988
This paper discusses how professional harbor pilots carried out a simulated surveillance to investigate the potential role of shore-based radar operators in reducing the risk of accidents to ships in narrow fairways. The results were encouraging but, contrary to expectations, graphic information about a vessel's dynamic tendency did not lead to quicker detection or better resolution of a grounding threat as compared to a conventional radar display. This paper will present the findings of this task order.
