Evaluation of large-scale mobile multimedia communication system built on Telescript agent platform-the Paseo Service

Since 1989 the authors have been studying the concepts of 1) implementing real-world objects in virtual space, 2) smooth navigation using intelligent agents, and 3) optimum communication. In order to realize and test these concepts, the authors have developed the fundamentals of the Paseo service which combines the Telescript/sup TM/ agent platform and MagicCap/sup TM/ real-world and object-oriented GUI platform. Paseo, offered by NTT Future Agent Network, Inc. (NTT FAN), is the world's second practical agent-based mobile multimedia communication system. Large-scale field experiments confirm the usefulness of the functions offered by Paseo in supporting mobile multimedia services; they include realistic user interfaces, handwriting-based messaging and media handling by mobile agents.
