A software product for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is described in this paper. Electric power plants using fossil fuels are included in the list of projects to be submitted to the EIA procedure in the Member States of the European Community. Using an expert system shell a computerized handbook describing a coal-fired power plant has been developed. The goal in the analysis of the electric production cycle from coal is to determine the sources of impacts and their effects on the environment
