The Living Donor in Kidney Transplantation: The Gothenburg Experience (1965–1990) From 490 Consecutive Donor Nephrectomies

In the Final Communique from a Conference of European Health Ministers held in Paris, 16–17 November 1987, it was concluded that donation of organs from living persons should be reduced and if possible completely stopped. Although long-term results of kidney transplantation were considered superior when using an organ from a related donor, it was felt that the short-and the long-term risks to the living donor were unacceptable. In this report, we present data on complications from 490 consecutive living donor nephrectomies in Gothenburg from 1965 to 1990.
