Estramustine phosphate (EMP, Estracyt) has been used for more than a decade as secondary treatment in cases refractory to hormonal or ablative therapy (Edsmyr et al. 1982) and as primary treatment in poorly differentiated tumours (Leisten­schneider and Nagel 1982). Though the clinical effects of EMP are well documented its mode of action is not fully understood.
