THE TERMS OF TRAVELLING. GENDER AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT

2000
The purpose of the study presented was to find out whether and how women's and men's relation to public transport differ. Is it possible to find themes or areas regarding how the informants think about and experience public transport where differences in gender are realised? The study of persons travelling by public transport was mainly carried out in two suburbs of Stockholm. The work went on for one year, from April 1 1998 until the end of March 1999. The study mainly focuses on the conditions of a large city although some conditions are probably also applicable to other parts of the country. The focus is on families with young children. The study is qualitative, using the ethnological method of fieldwork including participating observation and interviews. In addition, the informants also kept a travel diary during one week. Some twenty persons were interviewed and follow-ups were made. The interviews lasted for three hours on the average. Some of them are however longer, up to five hours while others are shorter.
