G317(P) Positive feedback reporting in the paediatric emergency department

2019
Aims The Paediatric Emergency Department (ED) at the Royal London Hospital is a busy trauma centre with 45 000 paediatric presentation per year, and is at the heart of the Children’s Hospital. Royal London Hospital Paediatric ED introduced the Greatix positive reporting system with the aim of recognising the great work of the department and improving team morale. This article describes the use of the Greatix reporting system over the six months since its introduction. Methods The Greatix system was introduced to the Paediatric ED in March 2018. Co-ordination is led by a departmental Greatix team, which includes junior and senior medical and nursing staff. Submissions are made through paper forms or the online system. Feedback is private, but not anonymous. Greatix reports are collated monthly. Individual certificates are sent to those nominated, copying in their supervisor and detailing the feedback. Key themes are then drawn out and circulated to the whole department. Results An average of 41 Greatix submissions were received per month – 254 reports over the six month period. Nursing staff were most commonly nominated with 54.3% of submissions (138/254), with medical staff receiving 32.3% of submissions (82/254). Emergency Department Assistants (2.4%, 6/254) and play specialists (1.2%, 3/254) have also been nominated, as well as other ED and non-ED team members (9.1%, 23/254). In two cases (0.8%), the whole team involved were nominated in particularly challenging situations. Various common themes emerged team-working, communications skills, working tirelessly, being supportive and kind, taking time with patients, staying calm, being proactive, initiating change, being cheerful and enthusiastic, and teaching. Conclusions The Greatix system has been adopted enthusiastically by the department, with 254 submissions since its introduction, and reports are submitted and received by all categories of staff members. Since the success in the Paediatric ED, it has also been adopted by the rest of the Children’s Hospital and Adult ED. Learning from Excellence is acknowledged as a way of recognising the hard work of team members in healthcare1. We show here how this has been successfully introduced in a busy Paediatric ED.
