The scope of practice of occupational therapists in Australia: Roles, responsibilities and relationships

2020
Occupational therapists commonly work in places such as community-based services, hospitals, schools, workplaces and prisons. In Australia, occupational therapists work with people across the lifespan. Some occupational therapists work with newborn children—for example, helping parents and children to improve feeding and to undertake activities that help promote positive attachment between the child and the caregiver. In the morning, Shaun the occupational therapist checks and responds to his emails and phone messages. Occupational therapists may assess and provide intervention for specific aspects of the person, occupation and environment. Occupational therapists also conduct their own research to advance their own personal knowledge base and the knowledge of the profession. Scope of practice describes the tasks, activities, roles and responsibilities that occupational therapists undertake. Occupational therapists will identify what is important and meaningful for the client, but may use diverse techniques such as ergonomics, play, relaxation, dressing training or driving assessment to help achieve the client’s goals.
