In this paper, a 5-speed automatic transmission SQ simulator is developed using AMESim. The SQ simulator is developed using the dynamic models of the engine, automatic transmission with torque converter, and vehicle dynamics and the hydraulic control system, which consists of PWM solenoid valve, pressure control valve, accumulator and actuator. It is found that upshift simulation results by the SQ simulator are in good accordance with the experiment results which demonstrates the validity of the simulator. It is seen that the pressure profile of the offgoing clutch dominates the torque response in the torque phase meanwhile the oncoming clutch pressure profile influences much on the torque response in the inertia phase. It is expected that the SQ simulator in this study can be used to predict the shift characteristics and estimate the influence of the design parameters on the SQ improvement design.
