The bit rate of reality [picture/sound reproduction]

2000
After years of work in film and television the author attended a professional basketball game. He found there that the live experience was much different from the recorded ones with which he had been working. Comparing the frequency, amplitude, and spatial domains of sound, and the corresponding ones for picture, between real and recorded events led him to calculate how many bits would be needed per second to make a reproduction essentially identical to the real thing.
