2010
Course Description: This course offers an introduction to current scholarship and issues concerning sport and the media. Course content will include critical analysis of media representations with attention to gender, race, sexuality, and (dis)ability, an examination of the structure of sports journalism and production, and an analysis of the role of mediated sport in our culture more generally. As such, we will examine the sport media triad: the role of institutions and producers, texts, and audiences and their relationships to each other. A variety of print, broadcast and personal media will be considered, including newspaper, advertising, television, feature film, internet, and magazines. Course Objectives: • Introduce students to the media/sport triad of: production/product/consumption focusing on a variety of print, electronic, personal and broadcast sport media; • Equip students with theoretical tools used to critically evaluate the sport/media complex; • Ask students to draw on their own sport experiences as sport participants, consumers and potential producers, and to consider the role of sport and the media in the context of our culture.
