A Framework for Integrating SDN in ICN

2021
Unlike host-oriented IP network Internet architecture, information-centric networking emphasizes disseminating contents without much bothering about its location. The contents in ICN is made directly addressable and routable. Moreover, the endpoints of communication are based on named content instead of host addresses. The ICN paradigm has focused on features for supporting heavy and voluminous traffic of the current scenario. SDN, on the other hand, is an emerging network architecture with the separation of network control functionality from the forwarding module. The migration of formerly tightly coupled control with forwarding strategy in individual network devices is converted into distinct programable components. This chapter is aimed at revealing the facts in implementing the SDN into ICN architecture deployment. The primary goal is to design a framework to make SDN-enabled ICN infrastructure for content dissemination. The chapter also covers the requirement of an SDN-enabled network that facilitates the deploy ICN architecture. IT is emphasized to design the SDN framework without requiring a complex transition strategy and redeploying new ICN-capable hardware. An overview of integrating SDN into caching and routing of ICN is also discussed in this chapter. It also includes an existing design framework and a new proposal for the implementation of SDN in ICN applications.
