Polyamine biosynthesis, a target to control seed germination : studies with recalcitrant dipterocarp seeds

1995
The possibility to block or slow down germination of the recalcitrant Dipterocarp seeds, Hopea odorata by inhibition of polyamine biosynthesis was studied using 1,4-diaminobutanone, MGBG, L-C-allylglycine. indole 3-carbinol, indole 3-carboxaldehyde. dicyclohexylamine and cyclohexylamine. Confirming our previous findings, germination was delayed when the synthesis of both polyamines (spermidine and spermine) were simultaneously inhibited. This was obtained with 1,4-diarninobutanone, MGBG. indole 3-carboxaldehyde. indole 3-carbinol and dicyclohexylamine. Based on our former and present results we propose a biochemical method to improve storage time of Dipterocarp seeds which is almost impossible by classical techniques. These seeds, mostly do not exhibit any dormance and germination occurs immediately after ripening. First results of the application of this method to the conservation of Hopea odorata seeds are presented and discussed.
