Aperture synthesis of the radio structure of SS433

1980
On the epoch 22 July 1979 VLA radio synthesis maps of SS433 showed the existence of radio structure at both 1.5 and 4.9 GHz. The structure has size of a few arcseconds and is closely aligned with the bulges of the SNR W50 lying nearly a degree away to the east and west. Thus the observed structure may be due either to the hypothesized precessing beams or to flaring activity from the central source, or both. Linear polarization was detected within < or approx. =0''.5 of the unresolved core at a level approx.1% of the core total intensity at both frequencies, possibly indicating that the region where polarized radio radiation is emitted is not Faraday depolarized by coexistent ionized gas.
