Emulation of High-Dynamic Automotive Loads using parallel MOSFETs in Linear Mode Operation

2021
In this work, an approach is presented where multiple load-balanced and current controlled semiconductor switches impose fast transients and high currents onto automotive powernets, dissipating the arising energy as heat into copper blocks. Analyzing the design using simulation allows adjustments to be made to achieve the required electrical and thermal performance while reducing the overall size and weight of the device. An application of such a device is later demonstrated by introducing high current pulses into the powernet of an automobile. Measurements yield that the device is capable of introducing peak currents of 1500 A and slopes of up to 30 MA/s.
