A comparative study on the effects of increase in injection sites on the magnetic nanoparticles hyperthermia

2021
Abstract The thermal response of the tumor tissue to MNPs hyperthermia can vary based on the configuration of the MNPs hyperthermia setup and its various parameters. Injection strategy highly influences the mass transfer in this treatment, which is one of the more important parameters associated with the success of the MNPs hyperthermia in cancer treatment. The goal of this study was to compare the mechanical response of the tumor tissue to single and three site injections. A numerical model of lower limb cancer tumor, based on CT images, was constructed to investigate this. The results of this study showed that while increasing injection sites slightly enhances the mass and heat transfer fluxes, they are much more significantly affected by the injection rate. The three-point injection did improve the nanoparticles and heat distribution by creating a more homogeneous distribution, which both increased the damage to tissue and decreased the risk of tissue necrosis.
