Diabetic wound healing with engineered biomaterials

2020
Abstract This chapter provides a systematic view of the biomaterial technology for treating cutaneous wounds in diabetic conditions. It starts by presenting the elements, characteristics, and processes that result in impaired wound healing. Also, it explains the main aspects of the physiochemistry of the structure and fabrication of biomaterials to settle the hydration, oxygenation, or infection control requirements in the diabetic wound bed. By the end of the chapter, the synergistic effect of the administration of growth factors, drugs, natural extracts, genes, or cells on diabetic wound healing using biomaterials with a role beyond as a simple vehicle are discussed.
