CPM Use Reduces Rates of Arthrofibrosis After ACL Reconstruction in a Pediatric Population

Purpose: Some practitioners advocate for the use of continuous passive motion (CPM) machine protocols in an effort to prevent the development of intra-articular adhesions and range-of-motion (ROM) deficits after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. However, prior studies have failed to show CPM use to be effective in increasing ROM, but has been shown to reduce rates of arthrofibrosis requiring manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) after adult ACL reconstruction.
