Isovolemic erythrocytapheresis technique as an alternative to conventional phlebotomy in patients with polycythemia rubra vera and hemochromatosis

2009
Patients with a primary or secondary erythrocytosis or iron overload (hemochromatosis, alpha thalassemia) are often treated with phlebotomy to reduce the iron stores. Frequently, repeated phlebotomies are necessary to achieve the treatment target. However, this procedure seldom causes side effects and the desired effect is not always reached. We developed an erythrocytapheresis technique based upon an isovolemic principle that can be used to remove larger amounts of erythrocytes and is experienced as more convenient by the patient.
