Synergistic effects on thermal stability of ethylene–propylene elastomers stabilized with hindered phenols and secondary amines

2002
Abstract Oxidative degradation of ethylene–propylene elastomers (EPDM and EPR) in the presence of various compounds: five hindered phenols (Irganox 1010, Irganox 1076, Irganox 1081, Irganox 1035 and Irganox 565) and secondary amines (two rosin derivatives) were studied. Both classes of compounds display antioxidant properties. Stabilization efficiency of these additives was assessed by the oxygen uptake method performed in air at 180°C and normal pressure. Significant kinetic parameters, oxidation induction times and oxidation rates, were obtained for polymer systems in mono or binary additive compositions. Some considerations concerning the effects of the chemical structure of stabilization compounds on the thermal stability of EPDM and EPR are presented.
