Total Scan a full volume scanning strategy for weather radars

2010
The most common way to perform measurements with a weather radar is to have its antenna perform a complete rotation on itself at a number of elevations between 0 and 30◦. This scheme maximizes horizontal coverage, but it neglects a large conical volume above the radar, sometimes called the cone of silence. Here, we propose a 'Total' scanning strategy where the full volume surrounding a radar is being covered.
