An overview of the prospects of extracting collagens from waste sources and its applications

2021
Collagen is a protein substance that has been widely studied due to its several advantages. It finds wide applications in various fields of endeavors. This mini-review presents a glance overview of the extraction of collagens from waste sources and its applications in different fields such as medicine, dentistry, food industries, cosmetology, and drug deliveries. Extensive studies have been conducted on the extraction of collagen from various sources of livestock waste such as fish bones, skins, fins, scales, and swim bladder. Type I collages were mostly observed to be extracted from the various waste sources the skin having the greatest potential based on the yields of collagen obtained. They are constrained in terms of extracting types II collagen due to the complexity of the extraction of process, and the low yield that is often obtained. Several applications of collagen in medicine, dentistry, cosmetology, food industries, and drug deliveries were highlighted and discussed. This study would serve as reference material for research that wants to have a quick overview of collagen extraction and applications in the selected field considered.
