Smooth operations and flow motion

2006
The US Federal Highway Administration has set up a program to study the feasibility of a national system of vehicle to roadside communicatiorns called the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) program. The VII program is based on the use of radio frequencies set aside by the Federal Communications Commission called Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC). The service is aimed at increasing road safety. The Innovative Mobility Showcase (IMS) developed for the ITSA'S 12th World Congress in San Francisco was a series of demonstrations of advanced intelligent transport system (ITS) applications. This included a highly advanced signalised intersection from Econolite. As vehicles passed through the intersection, traffic information was collected using Econolite's Autoscope Video Detection System. Econolite's Data Collection and Management Service (DCMS) provided a communications server linked to the internet. The IMS intelligent intersection broadcasts signal phase and timing information to IMS vehicles. Econolite's goal was to evaluate the benefits of gathering additional traffic data derived from VII-enabled vehicles.
