Dynamic response of a traditional hımış mansion using updated FE model with operational modal testing

Abstract Since ancient times, shelter has been one of the most basic needs of human beings. This basic need has been tried to be met by using different local materials considering both economic conditions and security understanding. The so-called “Himis” houses formed by filling the gaps between the timber frames with masonry elements reflect the typical features of the Ottoman city structure. Despite being exposed to many earthquakes and environmental factors, these types of structures have gained the trust of man. The finite element model of composite and complex structures such as himis systems requires the macro modeling method. However, it is an important issue in itself to transfer the material properties of exist composite structure to macro modeling by obtaining a conjugate value. Especially when material tests are not possible, matching material properties should be selected for macro modeling, and these values should really reflect the current state of the structure. This study focuses on examining the dynamic response of a traditional Himis mansion in Findikli district of Rize city of Turkey using updated finite element model based on the operational modal analysis test results. Conjugate material values are obtained by macro and micro modeling, and the macro model is updated to create the final model representing the existing structure. Dynamic response of the traditional Himis mansion is determined using updated finite element model. Displacements, principal stresses and principal strains are presented as contour diagrams and time dependent changes of maximum values. As a result of the analysis, it has been observed that the traditional Himis structure has an effective structural performance under dynamic earthquake excitation.
