The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of tobacco and tobacco products use, the factors affecting them and their compliance with the tobacco control law among Necmettin Erbakan University staff. This cross-sectional analytical study was conducted on 372 university staff. A questionnaire consisting of 40 questions about the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants, the use of tobacco and tobacco products, the tobacco control law and the prohibition of smoking in closed areas was applied. Addiction levels of smokers were measured by Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). The prevalence of smoking was 34.1% (n=127). The mean age of smoking was 17.8±4.7 years and the mean smoking age was 15.3± 10.1 years. 15.6% (n=58) of the staff are hookah, 7.5% (n=28) of cigars, 2.7% (n=10) of pipes, 6.1% (n=23) wrapping tobacco, a person was using chewing tobacco. Smoking frequency was statistically higher in male sex (p<0.001), 30-40 age group (p<0.001), working years between 1-10 years (p = 0.003), and working in units other than medical faculty (p<0.001). Of the university staff, 31.3% thought to quit but did not attempt to do so, and 39.6% experienced two or more smoking cessation attempts, 82.5% stated no smoking in indoor areas in accordance with the tobacco control law and 93.8% supported the smoking ban in indoor areas. In the present study, the frequency of smoking among university staff was found to be higher than the overall prevalence of our country. Controls should be increased and necessary warnings should be made in order to comply with the smoking ban in public institutions. University buildings and gardens should be accepted as "Smoke Free Air Space", brochures should be distributed and in-service trainings should be carried out to ensure effective implementation of the anti-smoking action plan.
