Design of Microgrid with Flywheel Energy Storage System Using HOMER Software for Case Study

2019
A comparison of two microgrid systems based on renewable energy sources (RES) generation for a case study “New Sohag University, Sohag, Egypt” is presented in this paper. The first microgrid system consists of PV solar panels, diesel generator (DG) and converter. By improving the first microgrid using energy storage systems (ESS) (i.e. battery for long-term storage purpose and flywheel for short-term storage purpose), the second system is constructed. Here, the data about economic and environmental effects of the two systems are collected by using HOMER software. Moreover, both two systems are compared in terms of Total Net Present Cost (TNPC), Cost of Energy (COE), carbon dioxide emissions and fuel diesel consumption. The impact of the uncertainty of the diesel fuel price on TNPC of the optimal system is investigated as well by the sensitivity analysis that allowed in Homer software.
