Objective The paper was to explore the characteristics of forensic psychiatric expertise in recent 40 years Methods A comparative study was coducted among 575 cases from 1960 to 1979(A) and 1 274 cases from 1980 to 1989(B) and 936 cases from 1990 to 1997(C) Results As date develop, the age was younger, the percentage of the females were increased , the cases associated with politic appeared to decrease (A:50 09%;B:4 24%;C:0 96% P 0 01) but the cases which associated with finances、sexual victims、mental injury and value of mental injury、sexual self defense et al, were increased ( P 0 01) In expertise diagnosis, the percentage of schizophrenics decreased (A:61 22%;B:37 83%;C:39 21% P 0 01), but there was a little difference between B and C groups The percentage of cases with value of responsibility were increased (A:14 29%;B:88 63%;C:99 13% P 0 01) Conclusions The research shows that with the development of society, politics, economy and culture, some characteristics of forensic psychiatric expertise are changed and expert testimony tends to be more legalize
