Intracardiac fluid resuscitation in penetrating cardiac wounds

1997
It is estimated that 60-80 per cent of penetrating wounds of the heart are lethal at the scene’. The cause of death is either due to exsanguinating haemorrhage or the effect of cardiac tamponade. Of the survivors who reach the hospital alive, 50 per cent will die in hospital (range, 98.1 per cent for left ventricular wounds, to 14 per cent for right ventricular wounds)2. Balloon catheters have been used to control haemorrhage from a large vessel or a cardiac chambe?. We report this case because the use of the Foley catheter was extended one step further in the management of a bleeding right ventricle.
