The Odor Characterizations and Interactive Olfactory Display: A Survey

In recent years, the characterization of odor information has gained an emerging concentration. Furthermore, with the development of interactive olfactory display technology, it has become a trend that odor blenders were required to generate more types of odors. However, the bottleneck was the lack of an automated way to create recipes for reproducing odors. One of the significant reasons why it is difficult to find a way for the automotive generation of odor recipes is the lack of a universal characterization for describing odors. The primary research contributions of this paper include the current state of odor characterization and odor generation devices, a new taxonomy of odor reproduction, interactive olfactory display technology in augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR), the challenges faced by odor characterization and odor reproduction.
